Routes

Welcome to the Routes page, think of this as the main part of our website and the section that will grow and grow over time.
From here you can read all our stories about our days out in the North Yorkshire Moors, Dalby Forest and other locations on our mountain bikes, and view the routes we have done. Each page will have the weather conditions for the day, length of ride and time taken, a small map of the route and an elevation graph. Also each route will be graded from Blue to Black so that if you fancy doing it yourself you will have an idea of what lies ahead. We will also provide links to maps and information for the various routes where possible so that you can attempt them yourselves. We are also hoping to provide GPX files so that you can download the route to your GPS and use as an aid to doing the routes.
To the right you can view a map of where we have been mountain biking, hopefully over time this will get more red dots as we explore now routes.

Previous Rides
Click on any of the rides below to read the full story on where we went and what happened to who while out on the mountain bikes, experience our pain and emotion. This section will be updated as we do more rides so please keep checking back.
Ride Planning
Before each ride we do a little planning using the internet as our main tool. If its a trail centre we are going to we search for it online and download a route map first deciding where to park and where the nearest bike shop is should we suffer any mechanical failure.
If our ride is to be a Moors ride etc we use two valuable websites, we check to see if there is a gps route on gpsies.com before we go and if there is we download it. Once downloaded if we fancy shortening or lenggthening the route we use "wheres the path" and excellent free online tool that allows you to edit the route on your PC using OS maps and Google Earth for reference. Once we are happy we upload the gpx file to our Garmin Forerunner 205 watch and also take a print out of the map and some instructions. This makes the whole day much easier and less chance of getting lost. Our first ride we used this method was the Masham to Lofthouse ride and it was a total sucess.

Garmin Forerunner 205
Every time we go for a ride we take our Garmin Forerunner 205. Mainly used for running but also useful on the bike. It plots our every movement via GPS. Once back from our rides we upload the data to Sporttracks program, we can then see how fast, how high and how long every ride has taken. We get the weather information using the 'old man biking' weather plugin for Sporttracks.
